The Gallery of Fashion written by Aileen Ribeiro I found this book not only a fantastic reference, but also a beautiful collection of photographs and paintings illustrating the significants of portrait art within fashion.

Aileen Ribeiro explores fashion from the sixteenth century to the present day.

What I enjoyed the most about this book, not only does the usual explanation of the paintings but also of the obvious fashion. Whenever possible, there are examples of garments and samples of textiles. It also explored many aspects of political change that had many fundamental changes to the dress to the time.

I have since brought this book as I have found it a valuable resource with my interest in period fashion and art history.

The most interesting discovery of this book so far, is the reference to an English bodice dated between 1645-55. This bodice is part of a collection at the Museum of London. I was extremely excited to see this as I’ve seen Illustrations and another reference of this particular bodice or doublet of this in ‘Period Costume for Stage & Screen 1500 – 1800 written by Jean Hunnisett’. It was great to see the actual garment.

I recommend this book for anybody who has an interest in fashion, history, or beautiful portraits.
