Pleat Basics

It is important when you are familiarising yourself how to create a pleat it is important to learn the terminology that goes with it. If you are referring to a pattern, the main two terms you really need to know is the fold line and the placement line.

Even though there will be differences in the spaces between the fold line and the placement line through your own designs or a pattern, this is the basic concept that you will be faced with.

The fold line is the edge where you pick up a piece of fabric, or folding along, and the placement line is where you will be placing it down along.

It is also important to note of the direction of the arrows, these arrows show you which direction in which to form the pleats.

So with this in mind, following along from left to right. The fold with be made along the fold line, placed down at the placement line and the space between these two points will create another fold known as the under fold or the back edge.
