The foundations of Textiles

Textiles comes from the Latin texere, 'to weave'. Primarily, it was applied to woven fabrics, now it also referred to natural and synthetic filaments, yarns, and threads as well as to the woven, knitted, felted, tufted cloth, braided, bonded, knotted (macramé), and embroidered fabrics made from them. It also applies to non-woven fabrics produced by mechanically or chemically bonding fibres.

The production of textiles is an ancient art, which the speed and scale of production has been altered almost beyond recognition by mass production and the introduction of modern manufacturing techniques.

Many textiles have been in use for millennia, while others use artificial fibres are recent inventions. The first synthetics were made in the 1920s and 1930s.
